My last post was in 2012?! That is crazy. So much has changed since that last post with even more changes on the horizon! Let's see...what's happened...

Well, after four years in first grade, I have moved to kindergarten! I felt like it was time for a change and I thought a grade level change would be exactly what I needed. I think moving grade levels has been really good for my teaching. Things are new and fresh and I'm excited about teaching new things. My kinders are so sweet and wonderful. I have a really awesome group of kids - my teammates are just a tiny bit jealous. ;)

I also really like that I moved down just one grade level. Moving from 1st to K, I came to kindergarten with a really solid understanding of where my students need to be at the end of the year and that has been so helpful in my planning and teaching. Also having all of my first grade materials has made differentiating for my higher kids super easy - I just pull out a 1st grade activity for that standard.

So that's where I am now. More about where I'm going later! For now, I want to know - do you change grade levels every few years? Or are you happy staying where you are? I've been debating trying an older grade in the next few years, but can't make up my mind! Pros and cons to staying or moving? Share!Ms. Ahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02687004890773063969noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6962569354713141679.post-91812036644020982382012-11-09T14:40:00.001-08:002012-11-09T14:40:09.234-08:00ThankfulDay three of thankfulness - out of my funk already!

Today I am thankful for the right to vote (and the fact that we had a day off Tuesday to do it!). We had a little mock election in our classroom today. Our candidates were Duck (Duck for President), Grace (Grace for President) and Otto (Otto Runs for President by Rosemary Wells - lesser known, but I like it!). Otto was our winner, and my students were so excited about the voting process. I can only hope that that same excitement exists in 12 or so years when they are able to vote in our national elections. I hear about my friends up north just now regaining heat in their homes and can't even imagine...I'm freezing down here in GA! Hoping that power and comfort are restored to those affected by this storm as quickly as possible. Ms. Ahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02687004890773063969noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6962569354713141679.post-48272228134275478482012-11-07T11:20:00.001-08:002012-11-07T11:20:59.777-08:00ThankfulI'm kind of in a funk today. The weather is dreary, the negativity of the end of a major election is still fresh on my facebook feed, and with the time change it's dark by the time I leave school in the afternoon.

This is not the mood I want to be in. So I've decided to jump on the November thankfulness bandwagon. Every day I'm going to list something that I'm thankful for, and I thought this would be a good place to do it. Feel free to join me!

Today I am thankful for the 21 sweet faces that greet me each morning. I have such a great class this year, and I am lucky to get to spend my days with them. :)Ms. Ahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02687004890773063969noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6962569354713141679.post-69448300006333353322012-10-21T15:56:00.002-07:002012-10-21T15:56:12.761-07:00It's a Rafflecopter!

This year I knew I wanted to have a farm theme because we take our annual field trip to the farm. I also knew I wanted to do a spiders theme because I just think they are cool! I also always have at least one sweet kiddo whose family doesn't celebrate Halloween, so I have to be careful about choosing October themes. :)

I had these on my calendar, but with some space in between. What could I use to link these themes? Charlotte's Web! What a smooth transition from farm to spiders. So we started reading the book as a class and I started looking for resources to go along with the book.

Surprisingly, there really aren't a lot of first grade resources for this book. I found some CUTE things on TPT, but they all covered topics we haven't gotten to yet! I stumbled across some SUPER fantastic clip art by Melonheadz and decided to make some stuff of my own. If you are interested, feel free to check it out at my TPT store!
we wrote journal entries as pirates telling what we did yesterday, what

This Friday we go on our annual field trip to the local dairy farm. Sometimes field trips are more stress than fun, but I really enjoy this one. :)

To prepare for our trip, we're doing a farm theme in our classroom this week. I made this little center activity to reinforce our recent study of nouns and adjectives. It's FREE at my TPT store, so feel free to go pick up a copy. If you like it, be sure to leave a rating and follow my store!
Now, I am a strong believer in teaching students the correct terminology for things, but I also know that at this age they sometimes need something a little more fun to help them remember. Because of this, the commutative property has always been known as "flip flop addition" in my classroom. I've found that this really helps the strategy "stick" and I FINALLY decided to create some activities to go along with the name we use. (Probably because I am really not digging our new math series...anyone else using Go Math? Not my favorite...)

I uploaded my activities to TPT, so if you're teaching your firsties (or seconds!) about the commutative property, too, feel free to check it out!

I can't believe it's been over a year since I last updated this blog! I miss the community of teachers here and have resolved to pick it back up for 2012-2013.

Question - This year I have three ESOL students in my class. I don't have any experience with ESOL and want to make sure I am doing the very best I can for these kids. Can anyone point me in the direction of any great blogs/websites on teaching ELLs?Ms. Ahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02687004890773063969noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6962569354713141679.post-59611656687332436052011-04-26T20:37:00.000-07:002011-04-26T20:37:38.929-07:00I though y'all would appreciate this... :)Today two of my girls were having a little disagreement. We're working a lot on problem solving in our classroom, so I decided to just sit back and watch them work it out. I could see that they were not making any progress, so I started moving in their direction to help them. When I got there, I could see that one of the girls was getting pretty angry.

She stomped her foot on the ground, crossed her arms and shouted,

"If you keep on being mean like this, when you grow up...you...you...YOU WON'T GET IN TO A GOOD COLLEGE!"

I died.

I l.o.v.e. first grade. :) :) :)Ms. Ahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02687004890773063969noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6962569354713141679.post-33631181249500400342011-04-25T16:57:00.000-07:002011-04-25T16:57:47.977-07:00WOO HOO!I signed my contract for 2011-2012 today and am thrilled to report that I will be spending another year in first grade! I love this age and am SO happy to be staying. :)

On a sadder note, 8 teachers from our school did not have their contracts renewed due to budget cuts. Please keep these teachers and their families in your prayers and keep your fingers crossed for employment opportunities for each of them!Ms. Ahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02687004890773063969noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6962569354713141679.post-38358824821443092312011-04-18T19:30:00.000-07:002011-04-18T19:30:10.872-07:00MeasuremANTSHey ladies,
I've put together a mini-unit for spring. It has a math (money) game, a fraction center and a couple of writing templates. I have been SO inspired by the things that others are posting, I just had to head over to Scrappin Doodles and share in the creativity. Since this is my first attempt, I would love any feedback you have to give. Hope some of you can use it! I just couldn't wait to put it up! :)

Ms. Ahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02687004890773063969noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6962569354713141679.post-49287828676596650282011-03-21T16:11:00.000-07:002011-03-21T16:11:17.368-07:00It was a sad day in room 113One of our class pets died today. :(

We started the year with our little tadpole, Jacob, and two guinea pigs, Bella and Alice. (Yes, we named our class pets after Twilight characters. The kids actually chose Jacob and Bella on their own. I may have encouraged them to choose Alice for guinea pig #2...)

This morning, Bella died.

Thankfully, it happened before the kids got to school. And what did I do?

I lied.

I told the kids that I had a friend who was a teacher without a class pet and that her class was learning about animals just like we were. We all agreed that the pets helped us learn a lot about how to take care of an animal and that it was a good thing to let Bella join their class so that they could learn, too.

Question - Was I wrong? I know that death is a part of life, but I also know how attached they were to this little creature and how devastated they would be to know she died. Would you have told the truth? Or would you have created a happier story, too?Ms. Ahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02687004890773063969noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6962569354713141679.post-6581726071204303142011-03-14T17:34:00.000-07:002011-03-14T17:34:31.075-07:00It's been a while!Just stopping in for a second to share tomorrow's morning work. We reviewed root/base words today, and it was obvious we need to do a little more reviewing. :)
One day I will have fabulous units to share like the rest of you, but I'm happy to share what I'm doing for now. :)Ms. Ahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02687004890773063969noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6962569354713141679.post-10226423981913832502011-03-05T14:01:00.000-08:002011-03-05T14:01:19.855-08:00This must be my lucky week!I never win anything. Seriously. Never.

UNTIL this week! I won two give aways and wanted to make sure you knew about the wonderful teachers who hosted them!

Earlier this week I won a copy of Kinder Glynn's Dr. Seuss Unit (just in time for his birthday!) and it is fantastic! So many great K-1 Dr. Seuss activities! My kids loved them all!

In that same give away, I also got to choose something from Erica Bohrer's TPT store! I chose her Laura Numeroff Author Study packet and it looks so great! Laura Numeroff is going to be my April author of the month, and I can't wait to use this resource!

Today I woke up to a comment from Janine over at Faithful in First telling me that I won a copy of Love, Pinkalicious! I adore the Pinkalicious books and can't wait to read this one!

Thanks for hosting these give aways, ladies! I'm a lucky teacher this week! :)))Ms. Ahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02687004890773063969noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6962569354713141679.post-64401132730563080822011-02-21T18:51:00.000-08:002011-02-21T18:51:12.426-08:00I wish my camera was working!Hey bloggy friends! I wanted to share my new Dollar Spot find with you, but something is wrong with my SD card. :( It's a good thing we have Winter Break this week so I can run out and get a new one! Anyway, photo or no photo, I found some adorable* fly swatters in the dollar section at Target this weekend. They're brightly colored and have big flowers on the back of the "swatter" part. They will be perfect to brighten up my "Read the Room" center for spring! Things don't last long in the $ section around here, so run out and get one (or three!) before they're gone!

Hopefully I'll have my camera working soon so that I can add a photo of how cute they are.

*Seriously? Only a teacher would look at a FLY SWATTER and think, "Isn't this adorable?!"Ms. Ahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02687004890773063969noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6962569354713141679.post-33062891770911030432011-02-15T19:37:00.000-08:002011-02-15T19:37:36.345-08:00Give away!Fabulous in First is hosting a fabulous give away! You really can't beat $5 for a hardback book by an author you love. Plus, I'm pretty sure the caterpillar is the cutest stuffed animal I've ever seen.
The only reason I do NOT <3 Kohls? I went in there with the intention of buying the books. $160 later, I have a new spring wardrobe. It's like Target. I swear these stores have a secret cover charge. I never just buy what's on my list. Impossible.Ms. Ahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02687004890773063969noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6962569354713141679.post-31862926869668064802011-02-12T12:11:00.000-08:002011-02-12T16:13:54.532-08:00Shapes!I love our math series. I really do. I think it builds a strong mathematical foundation for my students and they really seem to be grasping the concepts well. The only thing I dislike? I felt like all we did the first half of the year was add and subtract. Now, this isn't true. We graphed and interpreted data, we learned about place value and comparing numbers, but it seemed like every other chapter was addition and subtraction. SO, I was VERY happy to turn the page and find we were finally doing something else! My kids and I really enjoyed our geometry unit, and I thought I'd share a couple of the activities they enjoyed the most.
Just have the kids cut out the I's and me's and the bottom of the page and glue the correct pronoun into the blank. Nothing fancy or exciting, but it was useful for us. :)
